This piece marked the beginning of Sias’ art career in the Bay Area after moving to Berkeley, CA in 2023. The title “Sailing West” came to Sias after spending his first two weeks in Sausalito overlooking the water, taking in his environment and reflecting on his new direction. Distinct with its airy, even windy blues and greens, these flowing forms commingle with rigid reds and juxtaposing blacks. Westward flowing drips on the left side of the painting evoke sensations of sailing in windy Sausalito while the airiness of the overlaying brush strokes present a sense of sunsets and ocean spray.
